What You’ll Need:

succulent banner supplies

This project requires at least two pieces of felt. The background piece is designed to use a single 12″ x 12″ felt sheet to keep things easy. It can be any color you choose. I had some different colors on hand that worked perfectly. However, if you do end up needing to purchase some felt fabric for this project, the good news is that felt is super cheap to buy so it won’t break the bank if you are out of it in your fabric stash. I had just enough of the green felt from my scrap bin, so it worked out. Feel free to experiment with the colors to make this your own style and flair. Once you have gathered the supplies on the list above, it’ time to get started making this succulent welcome banner!

Tutorial

Step 1 – Download Template

Begin this easy sew succulent welcome banner tutorial by downloading the template below. Then print it out on your home computer. You’ll use this to cut out your fabric pieces and shapes. The free template makes it easy to a few of these banners at a time so you could make some for multiple spaces or even give some away as fun little gifts.

Step 2 – Create Banner Background

fold and pin banner background fabric

Next, we will focus on the background for the banner. Fold-down one side of your background felt by 1″ all the way across and pin it in place. I used a hem gauge here, but if you don’t have one you can just eyeball it.

cut off corners for banner shape

To give your background the shape it needs, measure 3″ in from each of the bottom corners, and 3″ up each side. Cut from point to point to form the bottom of the banner. Now your banner is beginning to take shape!

Step 3 – Cut Felt Templates

Step 4 – Assemble Felt Pieces

Next on this easy sew succulent welcome banner tutorial, it’s time to start putting it all together. Lay the felt cutouts on your banner background as desired. I just arranged mine with the succulent in the middle of the background. Then simply pin them in place.

Step 5 – Sew Felt

Using a free motion foot for your sewing machine, stitch around each felt piece. Free-motion simply means the feed dogs on your sewing machine are in the down position, so the fabric can be moved in any direction. Don’t let it intimate you! If this is your first time trying free-motion sewing, just remember it’s only fabric.

You can always try again for the cost of pennies. You can get creative and stitch designs inside or outside each felt piece. This project can be as simple or involved as you choose.

Step 6 – Assemble Background

Sew along the bottom portion of the background where it is folded over to form a casing as well. This can be down with a regular presser foot or a free motion foot.

inserting dowel rod into banner

Insert a dowel into the casing that extends at least 1″ past each edge of the banner.

Step 7 – Hang the Banner

adding ribbon hanger

Cut a ribbon to your desired length for hanging. Then tie it around each end of the dowel.
