Felt Kite Headband for Kids Sewing Project

Kids will love making and wearing their own kite headband. It is a wonderful sewing project for learning, and all the supplies can be purchased at the dollar store!

Teens, tweens, and even younger children can learn to sew. This kite headband is a good beginner project because felt is forgiving and cheap. If you don’t like it, just cut out another one and try again.

Easy Felt Kite Headband Project

The large, straight stitch will teach kids how to thread a needle and move it up and down through the fabric. Don’t worry if the stitches are perfectly straight. It’s a craft project, after all, and there is plenty of time to practice your hand sewing skills on more headbands or other projects.

Embroidery floss is easier to work with than sewing thread. It will give your stitches a bold look. You also don’t have to tie it off at the beginning or end. Just use a dab of glue to hold it in place.

Let’s get started!

Supplies for Kite Headband Kids Sewing Project

This looks like a long list of supplies, but you probably have most of them at home already.

Pick up a handful of headbands, so you have extra to share with friends. A package of felt will go a long way with this project. There will be plenty leftover to continue practicing your sewing skills on ornaments, plushies, and any other crafts you dream up.

How to Make a Kite Headband Kids Sewing Project

Step 1 – Download and Print Pattern

Begin by downloading the kite pattern below.

Print the pattern onto plain printer paper, and cut out the patterns with scissors.

Step 2 – Cut Out Felt

Then pin the paper kite pattern to craft felt in the color of your choice. Cut it out with scissors.

Next, pin the bow pattern pieces to two different but coordinating colors of craft felt. Cut them out with scissors.

Step 3 – Sew Running Stitch

Now thread an embroidery needle with six strands of embroidery floss. Sew a running stitch (straight stitch) from top to bottom and side to side of the kite pattern piece. Leave 4″ of embroidery floss at the bottom. Secure all other loose ends with a dot of craft glue on the back side.

Step 4 – Glue to Headband

Attach the felt kite and bows to the headband with a glue gun. Parents may need to help with this step, depending on the age of the child.

Step 5 – Add Embellishments

Secure half pearls to the center of each bow with craft glue (to save your fingers from hot glue!).

The kite headband for kids is an easy sewing project and awesome boredom buster. It’s also a great way to use up scraps of felt or embroidery floss you may have leftover from other projects.

Since all the supplies are low cost, the kite headband would be a nice activity for a birthday party or camp as well.
