Felt Ornaments DIY Instructions
Step 1 – Download and Print Template
Begin by downloading the free pattern to make your ornaments linked below.
Next, print the pattern templates. Then cut them out with craft scissors.
Step 2 – Cut Felt Shapes
Choose the color of felt you would like, and trace the paper patterns onto the felt with a pencil. Carefully cut out the felt shapes with scissors.
Step 3 – Assemble Felt Pieces
Now place one of the felt stars on top of one of the felt circles.
Step 4 – Prepare Needle and Thread
The next step is to thread your needle with embroidery floss in a coordinating color to prepare to sew. Thread will also work, but embroidery floss emphasizes the stitching.
Step 5 – Stitch Felt Shapes
Start stitching from the middle of the shapes to secure in place. Now you can get creative. Feel free to stitch a free hand design or use the pencil to sketch out your stitches, such as a snowflake design.
Step 6 – Add Embellishments
Add some personality with seed beads by threading them onto the needle as you stitch. White thread with white beads are perfect for the snowflake design.
Continue to stitch your design through both pieces of felt until you are satisfied with the result.
When you are finished stitching, pull the needle and thread to the back of the felt circle. Tie the thread in a knot, twice, and trim off any extra thread.
Step 7 – Assemble Ornament
Next, place the plain felt circle on the back of the pieces you stitched together. In addition, cut out a small strip of felt approximately 1 cm x 4 cm. This piece will create the loop with which to hang your ornament.
Now fold the strip of felt in half, and insert 1 cm of the open end between the felt circles.
Step 8 – Stitch Around Ornament
Then stitch around the felt circles to join them. A flat blanket stitch works well while adding a bit of a design to your ornament. Leave a small opening wide enough for stuffing.
Step 9 – Stuff Ornament
To fill the ornament, you can use scrap felt pieces. Cut them into tiny pieces and stuff the felt through the opening.
Step 10 – Stitch to Close
When your ornament is plump to your liking, stitch the opening closed. Tie a knot, and cut off any extra thread.
You made a felt ornament! It is beautiful as is, but for added bling, glue on some sequins. Then they will really shine on a Christmas tree!
