I never travel without my beauty essentials and today on Beginner Sewing Projects, I’m going to show you How To Sew A Lined Makeup Bag With Optional Quilting! This is such a cute bag you can sew. I have had the same cosmetic bag for years and recently, I noticed it was on its last leg. I wasn’t finding anything I liked in-store, so I looked around for some sewing inspiration and came up with this simple sewing pattern to make my own fun bag. I think the quilting adds a unique touch to the bag that gives it some extra class and style. The size is perfect for me, and you can scale the pattern up or down to suit your needs should you need something different. You can find the directions on how to do that here. This is such a simple sewing project, anyone that can sew some straight lines will have this done in under an hour. I used some fun print fabrics I had gotten on sale, but you could use whatever you had on hand. I also cut down a longer zipper to what I needed, but if you don’t have one, a 10-inch zipper will be fine.

Gather up your supplies from the list below and let’s get started!

What You’ll Need:

How To Sew A Lined Makeup Bag With Optional Quilting

The first step in this how to sew a lined makeup bag with optional quilting tutorial is to print and cut out the included free pattern. Then, fold your outer fabric right sides together and pin the template to your fabric and cut. Repeat for the lining fabric.

Cut (4) pieces of interfacing. Cut (2) 1.5”x3” pieces from the lining fabric for your zipper tabs.

Using a warm iron, adhere the interfacing to the WRONG side of the 2 outer pieces and 2 lining pieces.

Instructions for Quilting the Outer Bag Pieces:

Next on this lined makeup bag sewing tutorial, we will add the quilting to the outer fabric. If you don’t want your bag quilted, you can skip these steps. Using a ruler and a fabric marker, on the RIGHT side of the outer fabric, mark the lines for the quilting pattern. I did a diagonal, but you can do any pattern you like.

Using a 2” length stitch, stitch a straight stitch along each of the lines until all are completed. Do this for both outer lining pieces.

Now on this DIY makeup bag sewing tutorial, we will work on the zipper tabs for your bag. Fold your Zipper Tab short wide with wrong sides together. Using a warm iron press. Cut the metal tabs from the ends of the zipper. I bought a 14” zipper, so my photo shows a larger piece cut from that end.

Using a pin, close the open ends of the zipper, placing it about 2” down. Using a fabric marker, mark a line about 1/8” from the end. Repeat on the other end of the zipper.

Place the Zipper Tab, wrong side facing up on the zipper, lining up the crease of the Zipper Tab with the line you made. Pin in place and repeat on the other end.

Sew a straight stitch along the crease. Go back over the line a few times to make sure it is nice and secure. Repeat on the other side.

Trim the excess fabric of the zipper tab along the sides of the zipper so the fabric is flush with the edge of the zipper tape.

Instructions for Attaching the Zipper:

Next on this lined makeup bag sewing project, we will start putting the bag together. On a flat work surface, place the outer quilted fabric so the right side is facing up. Find the middle of the fabric piece as well as the middle of the zipper. Lay your zipper face down and match up the middle points and place a few pins to keep the zipper in place.

Now place your lining fabric, right side facing down, on top of the outside piece and align the top edge of the zipper with the raw edge of the top of the fabrics. Using a straight stitch, sew the zipper in place.

Open and flip the fabric so the right side of the pieces and the zipper are facing up (the zipper should be in the middle), with the zipper pull on the left. Pull up the lining and outside pieces from the bottom, and pinching them together, align the raw edges of the pieces with the open side of the zipper.

Pin or clip in place and using a straight stitch, sew the zipper/pieces in place.

Unzip the zipper about halfway and with right sides facing together, pin or clip the open sides together and using a ½” seam allowance, sew along the sides, making sure to reinforce on either side at the top. DO NOT SEW THE CORNERS CLOSED!! Going through one of the open corner, turn the pouch with the lining side out.

Instructions for Making Boxed Corners:

Next you are going to make a boxed corner. This allows your bag to “stand up”. Pinch the opening of each of THREE corners (leave one corner open) and line up the seams and press. Pin and using a 1/4” seam allowance, close the opening.

Trim the seam allowance on each corner as well as any excess zipper.

Unzip your zipper, turn your zipper pouch right side out.

For the last step in the how to make a lined makeup bag, simply hand-stitch or machine sew the open corner of the lining. Press.

And that’s it! Now you know how to sew a lined makeup bag with optional quilting! I think this turned out so nice! This is a great little bag to stow your beauty essentials. I always get lots of compliments on this when I travel. You can make this so much cheaper than you could buy something similar in-store. Make one for yourself and one to give as a gift.
