I finally have the time to do some sewing projects I have been putting off and I am so excited. I’m going to show you How To Sew A Denim Pouch For Beginners! This is a fun little sewing project that has so many uses. You can use it for beauty projects/craft supplies, jewelry, or anything you can think of. I love using denim as it usually holds up well in a lot of different conditions. You can make this sewing project in 20 minutes, making it the perfect project if you have a spontaneous afternoon free. I even let the kids help me decorate this and it turned out so cute with the flowers. I just used some hot glue to add the flowers to my pouch, but depending on what kind of pieces you have you could also sew them on. Pouches like this are great to sew as you can add easy organization and storage to any part of your life. I provided measurements in standard and metric format to make this easy to sew no matter where you are. This tutorial is simple to follow. Let’s check out what you need down below.
For this sewing project, you’re going to need a few supplies. I used some denim fabric I had leftover from a previous project, but this is a good candidate for using some old jeans or a worn out denim jacket. This would keep the cost for this project low and make it even more affordable. You’ll need a zipper that is the right length for the pouch you want to make as well as a zipper foot for your sewing machine. This makes a huge difference when trying to feed zippers through your sewing machine and I don’t sew zippers without it. It is a great investment for future sewing projects. You’ll need some matching thread, some fabric scissors or a rotary cutter and mat. This is another item I would consider an investment in your sewing career as it makes cutting out fabric so much quicker and smoother. You’ll need a ruler, some pins or clips, and a fabric marker to mark out your cuts. Gather up your supplies from the list below and let’s get started!
What You’ll Need:
- Denim cloth
- Glue gun & stick
- Flower design
- Zipper
- Matching Thread
- Zipper foot
- Fabric Marker
- Scissors
- Rotary Cutter, Cutting Mat, & Ruler

- Sewing Machine
How To Sew A Denim Pouch For Beginners
The first step in this how to sew a denim pouch for beginners tutorial is to cut out your fabric. Sometimes I will start a sewing project by washing, drying, and ironing my fabric first, but I didn’t think it was necessary for this sewing project. You’ll need to cut 2 pieces from the denim cloth 24.5cm x 20.5cm (or 9.64in x 8.07in each).
Lay the zipper face down. Align the first denim piece and the zipper, both on the wrong side. Sew them together using a zipper foot attachment on your sewing machine. This will make it so much easier to feed the zipper through your sewing machine. Repeat the same steps to sew the zipper to the other fabric piece.
Now on this denim pouch tutorial, we will work on the strap for our pouch. For this, you will need to cut another piece of denim into 21×1.5 cm (8.26in x 0.59in)
Fold the fabric piece in half and sew short ends. You’ll need to replace your regular sewing foot on your sewing machine if you still have the zipper foot on from the earlier steps.
To add it to our denim pouch, first align it on the right side of the pouch you’re making. MAKE SURE THAT IT IS INSIDE THE POUCH WHEN YOU ARE SEWING, so it will be outside when you flip it over.
Head back over to your sewing machine and sew both the left and the bottom sides of the pouch. It is crucial to make sure to open the zipper about halfway first before sewing everything closed so you can still turn your pouch right side out in the next step.
Flip the pouch to the right side through the opening you left in the zipper.
With your denim pouch complete, you can now add some cute designs. I added these flower designs by using the glue gun. You are free to add any designs you’re comfortable with.
And that’s it! Now you know how to sew a denim pouch for beginners! You can fill this cute pouch with whatever you want. From pencils and pens to your sewing supplies or even beauty projects, this little pouch can handle it all. This is a great sewing project to make if you have some old jeans or maybe even an old jean jacket that you are going to throw out. You could make several of the pouches instead and give some of them away as gifts. I know I will be using them to organize my space and I can’t wait!
