I have been using my tablet more and more for recipes lately and it got me looking for an easier way to display it in the kitchen. Well, I came up with a cute sewing project to help and I can’t wait to share it with you. I’m going to show you How To Sew An iPad Pillow Stand The Easy Way! This cute and simple little cushion holds your tablet at the perfect angle so you can read off your new recipe with ease. The included free pattern makes it quick and simple to cut out your fabric pieces so you can put this together in no time. If you are comfortable sewing straight lines, this project is for you. I use this with my phone as well when I am on video calls and need to keep my laptop separate to work. I used a standard pillow fill for this and I think it turned out nice. You could use a fill that is a bit heavier if you want, but I didn’t think it was necessary. Pick out some fabric you love and make one of these for every member of the family.

For this project, you’ll need some fabric fat quarters or about a 1/3 yard of fabric. Gather up the rest of your supplies from the list below and let’s get started!

What You’ll Need:

How To Sew An iPad Pillow Stand The Easy Way!

The first step in learning how to sew an iPad pillow stand the easy way is to wash, dry, and iron your fabric. This process acts as a preshrink so that your stitches don’t pull out if you need to wash this stand later. I plan on using mine in the kitchen and you never know what might accidentally get spilled on it. Once done, you need to print and cut out your pattern pieces. You’ll use them to cut your fabric pieces according to the cut list below:

  • 1 Base (bottom) (Making sure to place on the fold before cutting)
  • 1 Shelf
  • 4 Sides (body)

If your fabric is one pattern for the body, place 2 triangles with right sides together and pin or clip into place along the right side. If your fabric is 2 patterns, place opposite patterns together with right sides facing and pin or clip into place along the right side.

Now on this iPad pillow stand tutorial, it’s time to sew! Head over to your sewing machine and using a 3/8” seam allowance and straight stitch, connect the two sides together. Make sure to turn the piece at the seam. Repeat with the other 2 pieces. Once you are done, use a warm iron to press your seams open.

Place the 2 halves of the body you connected in Step 3, with right sides facing and making sure the seams are lined up. Pin or clip into place, along the right sides.

Head back over to the sewing machine and connect the two halves together, using the same 3/8” seam allowance and a straight stitch. Make sure to turn the piece at the seam. Using a warm iron, press your seams open. Now you will turn the iPad pillow stand right side out.

Fold your shelf piece together lengthwise with right sides together. Using a warm iron, press the fold. Using a 3/8” seam allowance and a straight stitch, close ONE of the short sides. Leave the other end open to stuff the shelf. Using a warm iron, press your seam open.

Now on this easy sew iPad pillow stand tutorial, turn the shelf piece right side out. With right sides together and raw edges aligned, pin or clip to the front of the body.

Turn the body wrong side out, tucking the shelf in. Take the base piece and place right side up. Pin or clip the base to the body on all 4 sides, leaving a 3-4” gap on the back for turning.

Using a 3/8” seam allowance and a straight stitch, attach the base to the body, making sure not to stitch on the shelf part of the front. Be sure to turn at the seam on each side.

Clip your corners to reduce some of the bulk so that it is easier to turn right side out in the next step.

Turn the Tablet Stand right side out.

Now on this DIY iPad pillow stand project, we can move to the final steps. Working through the open end of the shelf, stuff it with the Polyfil until it is the size you want. Using your sewing need, hand stitch the open end closed with a blind or ladder stitch. Repeat filling the body through the gap in the back.

The last step in this fun sewing tutorial is to hand-stitch closed with a blind or ladder stitch for a clean look.

And that’s it! Now you know how to sew an iPad pillow stand the easy way!
