Sometimes it’s the small sewing projects that I love the most. Today on Beginner Sewing Projects, I’m going to show you How To Sew A Snappy Pouch The Easy Way! This is such a fun little project. This snap pouch is great to use as a change purse or even a little cosmetic bag. I love how this turned out and how easy it was to make. I used several different fabrics on this so it would have some fun colors and texture, but you could make it all out of one color if you wanted to. This sewing project can be done in about half an hour and is simple for beginners or advanced beginners to tackle. I used a tape measure to give the top its snap feel and it works so well. I was able to find my fabrics on sale so that meant I was able to make this for almost nothing. I love sewing my own bags and accessories. You can save so much money over buying in-store. Plus, you get the added bonus of knowing you made it yourself! I made several of these to give away as gifts too and I think they will be a hit!

For this sewing project, I used three different coordinated fabrics. For the main body and the lining, I used some cute and simple pattern print fabrics. For the tabs, I used a more vibrant pattern fabric I had leftover from a previous project. I also added some batting to this pouch to give it some structure. You’ll need some other basic sewing items like some matching thread, fabric scissors or a rotary cutter, mat, and ruler, some pins or clips, an iron, and of course your sewing machine. You will also need a metal tongue tape measure and something to cut it with like tin snips or cutters. They will support the top of your pouch. Grab what you need at the links below and let’s get started!

What You’ll Need:

How To Sew A Snappy Pouch The Easy Way

The first step on this how to sew a snappy pouch the easy way sewing tutorial is to cut out the following pieces for your Snap Bag:

  • Outside of Bag (1st fabric): 7″ by 10″ (Adjust for a larger bag)
  • Inside of the Bag (2nd fabric): 7″ by 14″ (Adjust for a larger bag)
  • Pull Tabs (3rd Fabric): 4”x4”
  • Batting: 7″ by 10″ (Adjust for a larger bag)
  • Cut 2-5 ½” pieces from the metal tongue of the tape measure.

When you cut the metal tape measure, I recommend you use some thick gloves and a sharp pair of cutters. Be sure to take your time and be extra cautious, as the cut metal edges will be extremely sharp. I used a lot of masking tape of the ends of mine so I would no accidentally cut myself.

Directions for Making the Pull Tabs:

Next, fold one of the 4”x4” pieces of fabric. Fold in half with right sides together. Press lightly with a warm iron.

. This will form a triangle on the top and bottom. Flatten with the warm iron. Repeat with the other piece.

Directions for Making the Body of the Bag:

Now on this how to make a snap pouch sewing tutorial, place your inside piece (the longer one) with wrong side facing up on a flat. Fold down 1/4” on both short ends and using a warm iron, press.

Repeat folding down 2” on each end. This will form the casing you will use in a later step. Unfold for now.

The next step on this DIY snappy pouch tutorial is to layout and layer your fabric pieces. Place the batting and then the Outside of the Bag piece, right side up, on the piece from Step 4, positioning them evenly.

Position one of the Pull Tab triangles so the raw edge is lined up with the raw edge of the Outside of the Bag piece. Position it so it is centered. Repeat on the other end.

Fold the Inside of the Bag piece down so the folded ¼” lines up with the 2” crease. Repeat on the other end.

Now on this snappy pouch sewing project, it’s time to sew! Pin or clip the Pull Tabs into place and using a ¼” seam allowance, sew a straight stitch along the folded edge, stitching the Pull Tab in place.

Don’t forget to sew the other end.

Directions for Making the Casing:

Tear off a small piece of tape and attach it to the end of the measuring tape piece. Repeat on the other side. Do the same for the other piece of tape measure.

Place one of the tape measure pieces, face down on the casing. Slide each piece into the casing.

 Directions for Completing the Bag:

Now on this how to sew a snappy pouch the easy way tutorial, we will put the finishing touches on our bag. Fold the bag in half with right sides facing. Clip or pin the sides together.

Using a 5/8” seam allowance and reinforcing the beginning and end, stitch the sides closed.

Serge or zig-zag the raw edges to give the inside of the bag a finished look. I highly recommend this step.

Turn right side out and enjoy! Now you know how to sew a snappy pouch the easy way! Now it is ready to be filled with whatever you want. Quick and simple. Make a few of these for yourself and some to give away.
