How To Make A Beret

The first step in this how to make a beret sewing tutorial is to print and cut out the included free sewing pattern. Once you have done that, measure the circumference of the head you plan to make the beret for. Use the lines on the pattern or you can also use the chart below and adjust accordingly for the correct size for the desired age group:

  • Baby: 6-12 months: 15”
  • Toddler: 1-3 yrs. 18”
  • Child: 3-10 yrs. 20”
  • Teen: 10-13 yrs. 21”
  • Adult: 13+ years 23”

Cut your pattern pieces and cut as follows: 2 Large circles (Right and Left) and tape together as directed, 1 small and the band, which is the circumference plus 1/2” added to the length and 5.5” wide.

Your pieces should look like this when you are done.

Next, fold one of the large circles in half and then in half again, so it looks like a triangle. Do the same for the small circle. Place the small circle on top of the large circle, with the points aligned.

Pin in place and cut along the top of the small triangle. Unpin and open the large circle. You should have a circle cut from the middle. Discard the small circle.

Next on this DIY beret sewing tutorial, place the two large circles together on a flat work surface with right sides facing together. Pin in place along the outer edge.

Now it’s time to sew! Using a ½” seam allowance, sew along the outer edge. Press seams open and set aside this piece for now.

Next, we will sew the band for our beret. With right sides facing, fold your band in half, so the short sides line up. Pin in place and using a ½” seam allowance, sew a straight stitch, closing the ends.

Now you should have a tube.  Press the seams open and fold it in half with the wrong sides together and press.

Now on this simple beret sewing project, we just need to put the pieces together. Turn your beret right side out. Place the band inside the beret, with the folded edge of the band down and with right sides facing and raw edges and seams touching, pin in place. Sew the band in place and press.

And that’s it! Now you know how to make a beret! This simple sewing project is a fun way for anyone to be able to make this cute hat. I made a few of these and my girls love them. It is so fun to have projects that are accessible to everyone. I hope you have as much fun making this as I did. Hats can be tricky to make, but the included free pattern made is so easy to size this just right. I love that it has other sizes listed too to that it can be made for a range of different ages.
