Do you ever cringe when you go into a store and they are out of wipes for the cart? Or maybe they are so perfumey you can’t stand them? Today on Beginner Sewing Projects, we are going to show you How To Make A Shopping Cart Handle Cover – An Easy Sewing Project! You can place it on the cart handle and your hands don’t have to touch the germy surface. As we enter flu season, these can give you some extra protection against getting sick, along with washing your hands of course. When you wash the cover, either wash by hand or make sure the velcro is attached to each other. If not it will grab other clothing in the wash. This will fit most smaller handled carts. However, if you have thicker handles in your area, you may want to cut your fabric to 6 1/4 inches by 15 inches. This should be enough to accommodate any size. I used some fun fabric for mine and I think it turned out great. I always get asked about these when I shop with this. Sew a few of these for yourself and some for a friend.
You’ll only need a few sewing supplies for this fun little project. First, you’ll need to pick out your fabric. I picked out an inner fabric and an outer fabric for a fun coordinated look. Next, you’ll need some matching thread so it doesn’t stand out from your chosen fabric. You’ll need some velcro for this project, as it will act as the closure so you can secure your handle cover on the shopping cart. As far as tools go, you’ll need some fabric scissors or, my personal recommendation, a rotary cutter, mat, and ruler as it makes cutting of all kinds so much easier. You’ll need some way to mark your fabric – I always go with a washable fabric marker. You’ll also need some sewing basics like pins or clips, an iron or heat press, and of course, your sewing machine. Gather up all the supplies from the list below and let’s get started on this fun project!
What You’ll Need:
- (1) 5 3/4-inch x 15-inch Outter Fabric

- 13-inch Piece of Velcro
- Matching Thread
- Scissors
- Rotary Cutter, Cutting Mat, & Ruler

How To Make A Shopping Cart Handle Cover
The first step in this how to make a shopping cart handle cover sewing tutorial is to wash, dry, and iron your fabric. Since you will be washing this project, this initial wash acts as a pre-shrink for your fabric so that your stitches don’t get messed up the first time you toss this in with the towels. Once you have prepared your fabric, it’s time to cut your fabric to size. You’ll cut one piece of out 5 3/4-inch x 15-inch for your outer fabric and one piece of the same size for the inner fabric. As I mentioned above, if your handle is thicker, you can go to 6 1/4 inches by 15 inches.
Next, lay the fabrics on top of each other with the right sides touching. Pin them together all the way around.
Now it’s time to sew! Head over to your sewing machine and sew the two pieces together leaving about a 2-inch opening on one side. Be sure to do a backstitch at the start and finish.
Using the scissors, cut off the tips of the corners to reduce the bulk. This will make it easier to turn right side out in the next step. Just be sure not to cut through the stitching.
Now on this DIY shopping cart handle cover tutorial, turn the whole thing right side out.
Use the end of a pencil or like object to make sure the corners are pushed out. We are about halfway through this reusable shopping cart handle sewing tutorial!
Fold in the edges of the opening you turned it through to the inside. Then press with the iron so that everything is nice and flat.
Pin the opening closed
Head back over to your sewing machine and stitch all the way around the edge of your shopping cart handle cover. Remove the pins as you sew the opening closed.
Now we will work on how it will attach to your shopping cart. Pin one piece of the velcro along one of the edges. Center it along the edge as best as you can.
Then pin the other piece on the opposite side on the other side of the fabric.
Sew the velcro in place by stitching all the way around the edge of the velcro removing the pins as you go. Do both pieces and you are done. Use the scissors to trim any long pieces of thread.
And that’s it! Now you know how to make a shopping cart handle cover – an easy sewing project!
