What You’ll Need:
- 1/2 Yard Of Fabric – Adjust depending on the size bowls you are using
- White Beeswax Pellets (you only need about 1 Tbsp per cover)
- Matching Thread
- Wax Paper
- Cookie Sheet
- Sewing Clips
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Rotary Cutter, Cutting Mat, & Ruler
- Paint Brush
- Sewing Machine
You’ll only need a few items other than your basic sewing supplies for this project. Like I mentioned above, you’ll need some kind of wax. I went with beeswax and it is easy to order off amazon. You should only need about 1/2 yard or so of fabric depending on the size of the bowls you want to cover. I picked out this cute print fabric, but you could use a solid color fabric if you prefer. Other than that, you’ll need some matching thread, scissors, a cookie sheet, and wax paper for the final steps of the project, along with a paintbrush. I always recommend a rotary cutter and mat because it makes cutting curves so easy and the mat protects your surfaces. Now that you have your supplies, let’s get into this fun wax bowl cover tutorial!
How To Make A Wax Bowl Cover The Easy Way
The first step on this how to make wax bowl covers the easy way sewing tutorial is to lay out your fabric. I like to wash, dry, and press my fabric before I start sewing. Next, you’ll need to cut the fabric to the size needed. I normally lay the bowl I want to make a cover for on the fabric then cut it so that it is about 1.5 to 2 inches past the bowl. I just cut it out in a square, but you could use a rotary cutter or scissors and cut out the circle.
Next, lay the fabric face down. Fold the edges over by about 1/4 inch or a little less.
Then fold it over again and clip it in place. Do this all the way around the fabric so all the raw edges are hidden.
Next, it’s time to sew! Place the fabric on the sewing machine with the foot of the machine on the inner edge of the fold. Sew as close to that inner edge as you can. Be sure to do a backstitch at the start and finish. You want to sew all the way around. We are about halfway through this how to make wax bowl covers sewing tutorial!
I find it best to turn the corners by lowering the needle when you get to the corner, then lift the foot and swing the fabric around. Lower the foot again and keep sewing.
Now it’s to get ready to add the wax to our bowl covers. Lay a piece of wax paper on the cookie sheet. I clipped it to the edge of the cookie sheet using my sewing clips. Heat the wax in the microwave 20 seconds at a time and stir each time until fully melted. Lay the fabric so that it is face-up on the wax paper.
Dip the paintbrush in the melted wax and lightly brush the fabric with the wax. It just needs to be coated lightly, not super thick. Allow cooling then remove the bowl cover from the wax paper.
And that’s it! Now you know how to make a wax bowl cover the easy way! These bowl covers are great alternatives to expensive plasticware. Plus, I love that I can use these on the bowls I already have. These covers are also super easy to take care of. To wash, lightly wipe with a soapy sponge then rinse with cool water. Allow to fully dry before using again. They’ll be just like new. I use mine all the time and I always get lots of compliments on them. Make some for yourself and some for a friend! They make great gifts for any occasion.
