You can change up the color of fabrics to suit whatever your mood or season. I have made several as I keep finding new ways to use them. My kids have some hanging off the rails of their beds to hold their beloved stuffed animals, favorite books, and so much more. These are also handy to have at your changing table for those easy-to-grab items you are always searching for. These hanging storage baskets also make great gifts and are the perfect stocking stuffer. You know it is never too early to start planning for the holidays.

What You’ll Need:

• 1 Yard black fabric
• 1 Yard plaid fabric
• 1 Yard interfacing
• Matching Thread
• Iron or heat press
• Thread Clippers
• Sewing Clips
• Scissors
• Pencil
• Rotary Cutter, Cutting Mat, & Ruler

When it comes to the supplies needed for this quick and easy tutorial, you should be able to find them fairly easily. When I first started out making things, I would always buy way more fabric than I needed. I still do that sometimes, but only because I love the fabric or I have a small project idea I would want to use it for. You’ll need some interfacing to help your baskets hold up over time, some sewing clips, thread, I and I recommend getting a rotary cutter, mat, and ruler to make cutting out your fabric quick and easy.

How To Make Hanging Storage Baskets

First on this how to make hanging storage baskets sewing tutorial, you are going to cut two pieces of black and plaid fabric 9 1/2 inches wide. Length can be any size you would like the basket to be deep. The smaller basket here is 10 inches tall. The larger basket is 14 inches tall.

Next up on this hanging baskets tutorial, you will cut out a square on the bottom right that is 2 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches. Fold over and use this as a template to cut the same square on the left bottom.

Repeat the steps and do this to all the pieces both the two black and the two plaid fabrics.

Now you will be cutting out two pieces of interfacing and using one piece of black as a template cut out the two pieces of interfacing.

Cut one piece of plaid fabric 2 by 5 inches. Fold and press. Fold again, press, and stitch. This is the loop the basket will hang from.

Press the interfacing to the back(wrong side) of the black fabric. Place the loop on the black fabric with the loop facing down. Stitch across the loop. You can add clips to help keep your fabrics from shifting on you while sewing.

Place the black fabric right side up and interfacing side down. Place the plaid piece face down on top of the black. Add clips all the way around and stitch across the top. Do this for both sets of plaid and black. You only need a loop on one black piece.

After the tops are stitched, layout the fabric with the right side face up and the other one right side facing down. Plaid on plaid and black on black.

For the next step on this hanging basket sewing tutorial, you are going to stitch the long ends but leave a small opening on the black end for turning your fabric right side out.

Stitch together the two ends but do not stitch together the insides of the four boxes.

Now, pull together the boxed ends and clip them together. This will give us the shape we need for the baskets.

Sew across each end to box out the basket. It is really starting to come together!

The final step is to flip our hanging basket right side in with the hole that you left on the black side. Stitch the hole on the black side closed and push the black liner inside of the plaid. Your basket is now ready to hang.
