We have the perfect summertime sewing project for you! Today on Beginner Sewing Projects, we are going to show you how to make this Fun & Simple Beach Roll-up Bag! This super easy sewing project can be made in about 30 minutes with minimal supplies needed. This convenient beach bag is just the right size for carrying some small items like sunscreen, a few snacks, and your phone. I love this roll-up bag because it has a pillow sewn right into it! Hello, relaxing day at the beach! You can also take this bag to the pool as well. I usually just put it up on one of the pool deck chairs and it turns them into a super comfortable place to lounge while the kids are having fun. If you’ve ever tried to take your kids to the beach, you know that it can quickly become an ordeal. I have switched to carrying these when we go to the beach as the kids can carry their own towels and toys in the same bag. It means fewer things I am trying to wrangle by myself and makes for a much less stressful time.
I made some of these for the whole family and they have turned out great. You can make them with any size beach towel. My husband uses one of those super huge beach towels and it is big enough for us to both share the pillow. Gather your supplies from the list below and let’s get started!
What You’ll Need:
- extra large beach towel
- 2 yards of belting; white
- 1/2 yard fabric; should match towel
- Polyfil
- Thread to match
- Iron or heat press
- Bias Tape
- Thread Clippers
- Sewing Clips
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Rotary Cutter, Cutting Mat, & Ruler
You’ll only need a few basic sewing tools and supplies for this sewing project. You’ll need some poly-fil for stuffing the pillow part of your beach roll-up. You’ll want to use a reversible beach towel so that when you fold it over it has a pattern. You’ll also need some material for your handles. I used some white belting, but you could use fabric or rope or whatever you have on hand. I recommend getting a rotary cutter, mat, and ruler if you intend on sewing more projects as it makes it so much easier to get nice straight cuts in your fabric.
How To Sew A Fun & Simple Beach Roll-up Bag
The first step in this fun & simple beach roll-up bag sewing tutorial is to pick out your towel. The towel you pick should be reversible so that when you fold it over it still has a pattern on it. Once you have picked out your beach towel, fold over the top of the towel the size you would like the pillow. I made mine a decent size, but this will differ from the size of the towel that you are using.
You’ll want to stitch along the side and across the towel to make your pillow. Leave the end open and then stuff with poly-fil to your desired firmness. I like my beach pillows to be pretty solid, but do whatever would be comfortable for your beach nap.
Once you have stuffed the pillow section to your liking, sew up the open end of the pillow. Now with the pillow done, we can attach the straps.
Now on this fun & simple beach roll-up bag sewing tutorial, roll the pillow all the way to the end. Once rolled up you will mark where the backside of the pillow is to put the straps. Pin the straps in place.
On the end of the towel, you will also mark and pin the straps in place. This will make the bag easy to carry.
Unroll the towel and stitch the straps in place by stitching a box at the end of the belting. You may also criss-cross stitch it as well so the strap stays secure when you have the bag loaded. Now that the handles are attached it’s time to add the pockets.
Now on this fun & simple beach roll-up bag sewing tutorial, roll up the towel and measure the area that sits naturally to the top of the towel where the outside handles are opposite the handles near the pillow. This is the area to place the pockets. Each towel will differ depending on the size towel used. Measure and cut out material squares for pockets. Be sure to add extra material for folding for the hem.
Once cut press a hem around the pockets for sides. Stitch all four sides on all three pockets.
Attach the pockets to the beach roll-up bag and stitch the right, left, and bottom. Leave the top open for the pocket.
And that’s it! Now you have a fun & simple beach roll-up bag! This super easy sewing project is perfect for your next trip to the beach or the pool. The sewn-in pillow makes relaxing while watching the kids easier than ever. I wish I had made one of these sooner.
