We have another super fun sewing project for you today! I am really excited about this tutorial and all the many uses it can have! Today on Beginner Sewing Projects, we are going to show you How To Make A Boxy Cosmetic Bag! Do you ever find yourself sifting through your drawers looking for all the things you need to get ready for in the mornings or a night out? This little bag helps keep all your beauty essentials in one place. These not only are super functional and have many different uses, but they also look super cute sitting out on your counter. This is a great project for anyone just starting out in sewing. You can make these in different sizes so you have your own matched set! You could also personalize these and give some of them away as gifts. I use one for my beauty supplies and one for other small items I don’t want to pack loose in my stuff. I also made one for my daughter and she loves it.
These boxy cosmetic bags are a staple in my home! Between myself and my daughter, we have a ton of things that need to be stored. I love how versatile these bags can be. I would almost guarantee that you will be making way more than just one of these bags in the future. They are great for your cosmetics, medications, toiletries, and so much more. They are easy to grab and toss in your bag too. Do you have little ones still that require lots of things? I have one for every occasion! Get ready as we walk through this tutorial together!
What You’ll Need:
- 1 yard of fabric (all the same or you can do different for inside of the bag)
- 1 zipper – ( 9-inch zipper for small bag and 12-inch zipper for big bag)
- 1 yard fusible interfacing light to medium weight
- Thread to match
- Iron or heat press
- Bias Tape
- Thread Clippers
- Sewing Clips
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Rotary Cutter, Cutting Mat, & Ruler
The supplies needed for this makeup bag are pretty straightforward. The only thing extra would be the interfacing. I like using medium-weight fusible interfacing as it helps the bag stay upright when open and in use. Nobody likes to be sifting through a cosmetics bag that has fallen all over itself.
How To Make A Boxy Cosmetic Bag
For our first step on this how to make a boxy cosmetic bag sewing tutorial, start by washing, drying, and ironing your fabric. This will act as a preshrink so that your stitches don’t pull out when you wash it. Make sure you don’t wash your interfacing. Next, you are going to decide what size Boxy Cosmetic Bag you are going to want. I have provided the measurements for both the small bag and the large bag. For the 9-inch zipper small bag, you will cut your fabric 10×14 inches. For the 12 inch zipper larger bag you will cut your fabric 13×18 inches.
Now you will cut two of the material and cut two of the fusible interfacing to the size you’d like.
Next, you are going to press the fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric. This helps the fabric be a little bit more sturdy and stand up.
Now on this how to make a boxy cosmetic bag sewing tutorial, place one piece right side down. Place another on the top right side up. Put the zipper at the top with the zipper to the right with it right side up.
Starting at one end and giving yourself a 1/4″ seam allowance, stitch along the top with the zipper foot.
Now, will open it up and press. Stitch along the top near the zipper. Flip over and align the zipper face down with the top. Stitch along with the zipper foot. Open up the zipper, press, and topstitch.
With the zipper half open stitch along each side on the wrong side. Trim off excess.
Now on this how to make a boxy cosmetic bag sewing tutorial, we will box out the cosmetic bag. Turn the bag on its side and make the corner flat. Measure in 1 inch to 1 1/2 inches. Usually, you will find that when you do this there is a natural boxed feel to the corner. We are about halfway through this how to make a boxy cosmetic bag sewing tutorial!
Now that you have measured where you want your corner to be, this is where you will stitch across and then cut off the excess. Not too close to the seam as you don’t want your stitch to come apart. I have done this too many times. Do this on all four sides.
Pro Tip: This is where I backstitch and stitch across again. This keeps it really secure when using the bag in the long run. It’s a crunch point so I like to have it more secure. Some will add bias tape over these but that’s totally optional.
Flip the fabric right side out and push out the box corners you have just sewn. This is what that will look like. It doesn’t have to be perfect, mine wasn’t when I first started. To be honest, sometimes they can still get a little crooked, but my cosmetics don’t seem to mind!
