Cut Fabric for throw pillow

To get started on this step-by-step how to make throw pillows the easy way, you are going to cut two pieces of fabric 18×18 inches. Since this is not a cover we are making, but a whole throw pillow, you will not need to prewash the fabric ahead of time. Place one piece of fabric wrong side down and place another on top of it right side down to where the right sides are facing each other inside as seen above.

Clip Cut Fabric

The next step in making this throw pillow is you are going to clip or pin around all four sides of the fabric, making sure the edges line up. If they do not match perfectly it’s ok. As long as they are within 1/4″ you should be good.

Sew All Sides of throw pillow

Now on this how to make throw pillows the easy way, it’s time to sew the case of the pillow to hold the stuffing in! You are going to sew all four sides while leaving a 3 inch opening at the bottom of the pillow for turning it right side out and filling it with the poly-fill stuffing.

Clip Corners and turn right side out

You will want to clip all four corners of the pillow, being sure not to clip the stitching. Doing so will help keep down on having thick bulky corners once you turn right side in making sure to poke out the corners. I like to use a chopstick or the eraser end of a pencil, that way you don’t poke through the fabric.

Fill and Stitch throw pillow Closed

For the last step in this how to make throw pillows tutorial, you are going to fill with poly-fill or with stuffing from older pillows. If you can’t find poly-fill, it’s fine, using stuffing from old pillows is a great way to reuse and recycle, sometimes you can get old pillows in great shape for quarters or fifty cents at garage sales. Just make sure it from a pet and smoke-free home. Tuck in the edges and stitch the bottom hole closed on the machine.
