Do you or a family member have a ton of neckties that are just taking up valuable closet space and collecting dust? Today on Beginner Sewing Projects, I’m going to show you how to make an Easy Sew Glasses Case From Neck Tie! This simple necktie case can be used for glasses, pencils, and so much more. It is a great way to upcycle an old piece of clothing that isn’t being used anymore. My husband has a ton of old ties he never wears anymore. Some of his ties have some wild retro style, so I am looking forward to upcycling them into more fun sewing projects. This quick and easy project is super easy and can take less than fifteen minutes from start to finish. If you are a beginner just starting out in your sewing journey, this is a wonderful project to start on. I made one of these for myself and each of the kids and they love them. We always get lots of compliments on them as well. So, look around in your husband’s closet for ties he doesn’t wear anymore, and let’s get started!

For this project, you’ll need a donor neck tie, some matching thread and your sewing machine, some pins or clips, and some scissors. If you plan on sewing more regularly, I highly recommend investing in a rotary cutter, mat, and ruler as it makes cutting much faster and more precise. Gather up the supplies you need and have fun making this glasses case.

Easy Sew Glasses Case From Neck Tie

Step 1: Cut Tie

The first step on this easy sew glasses case from a neck tie sewing tutorial is to cut the tie to the desired length. If you have a certain pair of glasses or sunglasses in mind, you can use the length of the glasses as your measurements and just add an inch. I will be using 6.5” as my measurement. Make sure that you are not measuring from the triangle tip, but instead from the bottom of the triangle side, right where it starts folding over in the back. Using your scissors or rotary cutter, cut the bottom of the tie off.

Step 2: Sew

Pull the tie inside out. You may notice that the middle seam, where the two sides of the tie meet is not stitched securely. If this is the case, pin or clip the two sides together, right side to right side, and the bottom opening that you cut. If the middle seam is sewn securely, then just pin or clip the bottom opening shut. Head over to your sewing machine and sew a straight stitch closing the opening on the straight edge and the middle seam.

Once sewn, flip the tie back to right side out. We are about halfway through this simple glasses case from a necktie sewing tutorial!

Step 3: Construct Closure

There are a few ways you could construct the closure. You could use Velcro, a button and loop, or snaps. We will go over how to add snaps because that is what I had on hand. The placement of the snaps would be the same placement if you used Velcro or buttons and a loop.

Place one of the snaps at the back of the top tip and then another snap on the back under the bottom V. Test and make sure the opening is closed enough when snapped so that the glasses do not slide out of the top.

Put your glasses in and that is it! Now you know how to make an easy sew glasses case from a neck tie. This simple project could take less than fifteen minutes from start to finish. The best part is the pouch can be made for more than glasses. If you make the cut a little further down and make the pouch longer, it could be the perfect pencil case!
